echelon Schwarzwald

Welcome to the beautiful and mysterious Black Forest (Schwarzwald), home to fairy tales, cuckoo clocks, and delectable black forest cake.  Over the next four days you will enjoy an amazing culinary, cultural and cycling adventure that highlights the best that this wonderful region has to offer.

For our Schwarzwald tour, we will stay in a luxury 5 star resort in the region and have day rides to surrounding areas and sights. The hotel is worth the trip by itself, offering amazing dining, spa treatments, massages and numerous other amenities which provide unsurpassed comfort after a long day in the saddle.

The following itinerary has been designed to make the most of the cultural, scenic, and adventure opportunities that the Schwarzwald region has to offer.

Arrival / Transfer:

Today you arrive in Frankfurt. We collect the group and drive south toward Baiersbronn in the heart of the Black Forest. On this first day, we fit your bike, to ensure you the most comfort on our rides over the coming days. After your fitting is complete, enjoy the hotel and surrounding area before our welcome dinner. Tomorrow we start bright and early with a nice warm up ride to kick off the week.

Day One:

Today is our first riding day.  Each participant has the option of doing a one-way, 30 mile ride (48 km) with 640 meters of climbing, or a round-trip version that comes in at 59 miles (95 km) with 1300 meters of vertical ascent.

Today includes two castles, Schloss Berneck, and Schloss Hohennagold.  While we take time to explore these two castles, both dating back more than 1,000 years, we also have the opportunity to explore idyllic towns of the eastern side of the Black Forest, heading into the Swabian region of Germany. We will enjoy a memorable lunch in the quaint village of Nagold before we start our return journey.  If you are not feeling up for the return ride, we will provide a shuttle back to the hotel.

Day Two:

Today is our French Connection.  The city of Strasbourg is our destination.  Once again, depending on your level of enthusiasm, you can either take a one-way, or round trip ride today.  The outbound trip today is mostly downhill over the 38 mile (61 km) distance. While there is a slight bit of climbing on the one-way version, 485 meters, you will be able to enjoy plenty of descent, with 950 meters of drop on the way down to Strasbourg.  Should you choose to ride round trip, the total distance for the day is 80 miles (130 km) with 1600 meters of total climbing.

Once we arrive in Strasbourg, take the opportunity to explore the city, and enjoy some local cuisine for lunch.  After lunch, we have scheduled a wine tasting, including wines from local German and French vintners, prior to our return to the Baiersbronn area.

Of course, both sections of the ride offer amazing views, history and roads.

Day Three:

Today we journey to the beautiful historic spa town of Baden Baden. Once again, you can choose to do a 32 mile (52 km) one-way ride, and return to the hotel in the van, or ride a full 73 mile (118 km) loop. Climbing opportunities exist on both routes, with the one-way ride offering more than 600 meters, and the full loop providing close to 2000 meters of accent.

While in Baden Baden, we will enjoy lunch at one of the city's finest restaurants, and also complete a wine tasting that highlighting more amazing wines that the region produces. Additionally, a complementary visit and treatment in a luxurious Roman spa is included today as a mid or end of ride perk.

Day Four: Today is the final day of our Schwarzwald tour. We end the tour in style with a long ride to the historic city of Freiburg (also one of the sunniest cities in Germany).

Our ride today includes two long climbs, with a total vertical gain of 1080 meters over the 57 mile (92 km) distance. The first climb out of the gate averages 5% over 7.5 km, and the second averages 7.5% over 5 km.  The second climb is the real challenge today, with short, powerful sections climbing at over 15%.

After we top out on the second climb, we close out the tour with 25 miles (40 km) of downhill / flat terrain into Freiburg. Spend the afternoon exploring the city before the late afternoon transfer back to Frankfurt.

Should you wish to add an extra night in Freiburg, we can help arrange hotel and transportation to your next destination or return to Frankfurt for the following day.
